#JFWITH: MAXILASHES

If you know me, you will know that I absolutely adore eyelashes - absolutely adore! Not every eyelash technician does individual/semi-permanent lash extensions well but once I found Maxine on Instagram and saw the positive reviews her clients had left her, I paid her a visit and now I would like to call myself a loyal member of the Maxi Lashes Club! Having founded her amazing business recently, I decided to interview Maxine to get more of an insight into her business, brand and journey as a lash technician thus far!

JF: What is your name and what do you do?
M: Hi, my name is Maxine; I am an eyelash technician, founder of Maxi Lashes. I am also a HR student and currently work in my field of study.

JF: How did you get into doing eyelashes?
M: Initially, I was actually doing cluster lashes on myself and for family. At the time, I was working in a salon... shout-out KUB! My managers there were extremely supportive and actually encouraged me to take a semi-permanent lash course. I took the course and it was actually amazing. I stopped doing lashes for a while but I started up again a few months after this period and launched my business from the comfort of my own home.

JF: You seem like a very busy young lady, how do you manage running Maxi Lashes with your own personal commitments?
M: Prioritisation and effective time management help me do what I do. I use my business to work around the things that I have going on. Don’t get it twisted, Maxi Lashes is my baby but there are other things in my life that are contributing to my self-development that require my attention. I mean, I work Monday to Friday, standard hours, 9am – 5pm. I am also a supervisor in a retail store where I work every weekend. I am constantly working but I ensure that I dedicate enough time to every aspect of my life outside of Maxi Lashes.

JF: I have to give you props for all of that, I have one job and I struggle with that!
Honestly! It takes time to get in control of everything but once you do, you will see your productivity just triple. Now, with regards to Maxi Lashes, what has been your biggest struggle?

M: Struggles? Hm. No-shows! Oh my goodness, no-shows! When I first started, I would be sitting at home, waiting for clients and they simply would not turn up. I mean, I was young but now, I have a strict deposit policy in place and I have noticed that this has rectified said issue. Secondly, the lashes themselves. Now, the majority of my clientele are of Afro-Caribbean descent and many of them have extremely curly lashes. On average, it takes me around 2 hours to do a full set for someone with curly lashes but sometimes, I can’t anticipate the curliness of one’s lashes and it can take me up to 3 hours to successfully complete a full set. It is extremely tiring and I constantly have to remind myself not to get frustrated when doing these lashes. To be fair, I know what I am doing and I know why I am doing it and that thought alone keeps me going.
JF: I love that! Sometimes it is hard to maintain composure in trying situations but knowing why you are doing a certain thing is definitely essential.
M: Definitely, maintain professionalism at all times is key. Just because I do the lashes in my house does not downplay my business and professionalism. Sometimes, with clients, it can be difficult especially when they don’t follow my ‘lash aftercare’ and advice. Ladies, if you get your lashes done please make sure you are following the lash techs aftercare advice! It's for your own benefit and makes your lashes last longer.

JF: Now that, I definitely agree with! Follow the above tips, ladies! So, I came across your brand on social media. How vital has social media been to the growth of your business?
M: Social media! Oh my, it has contributed to the growth of my business massively. The impact of social media is so positive – around 60% of my clients actually come from my social media platforms.

JF: 100%. Social media plays a significant role in what we do nowadays so I guess it is important for businesses, particularly businesses like yours, to get the word out and about. Okay, so your branding and marketing, talk me through it.
M: I believe that consistency is key and with my lashes, I take several videos and pictures of the process and the outcome when it comes to the application of lashes. I aim to be super consistent with my posts on my business Instagram.
JF: Noted! So, who are your main lash inspirations?
M: I have two main lash inspirations – Lash by Leah and Flawless Lashes by Loretta. Lash by Leah is amazing! I see her work and it motivates me to work harder. I love what she does, how she does it and look to her when it comes to improving my technique. Flawless Lashes by Loretta is also an amazing lashpreneur! She is someone that is consistent with her work and that inspires and motivates me to keep going!

JF: Perfect! In terms of business, what would do you wish someone told you before you got started?
M: It is not always going to be easy and I wish I knew this from the beginning. I mean, it might be a pretty obvious notion but I honestly believed that my clientele would be a lot larger than what it currently is now. It is important to stay motivated and remember why you started, that thought alone ought to push you when you are feeling a little low. My clients’ reactions are amazing and after every client, I am reminded why I do what I do.

JF: Where do you see Maxi Lashes in the next year and five years?
M: There is a high demand for Russian volume lashes. So in order to meet this demand, I need to work hard on my marketing and branding. This year, I really want to expand my clientele! I am based in Essex however surprisingly; most of my clients come from North and South London! I really want to create a buzz in Essex. Maxi Lashes will be introducing more services (God willing!), micro-blading being one of them. I am currently weighing out my options but hey, just keep your eyes peeled for the announcements to come! Five years? My ultimate goal is to open some sort of beauty training service that will hopefully propel young women into the beauty industry.

FYI: In case you didn't know, Russian Volume Lashes are literally breaking the rules and changing the game! (Word to Uncle Nikky!) Russian volume lashes are two or more lashes made into a fan and then applied to the clients' natural lash to create a fuller look.

Final words:
I certainly love getting my lashes done with Maxi Lashes. Expect a warm welcome, a kind spirit and most importantly, bomb lashes that will last you such a long time if you listen to Maxine! I am personally inspired by how far she has come and I am very excited to see where she is headed!
