JDFitnessUK started almost five years ago and having personally followed Jamel on social media for about two years, his posts definitely reflect his character and genuine passion for business. I had the pleasure of chatting with JD a little while ago to get to know him and his brand better...
JF: So who are you and what do you do?
JDFITNESSUK(JD): My name is Jamel Dietz and I am the founder and director of JDFITNESSUK. I am a qualified personal trainer and nutritionist. Some people may know also, that I am a graduate forensic scientist.
JF: Wow, talk about qualifications upon qualifications! Pulling you up on your degree, firstly, congratulations! Is there any reason why you have not pursued a career in line with your degree?
JD: I chose not to jump into my career straightaway and made a decision to focus on building up my brand. Don't get it twisted though, I will be making very good use of my degree in the next year and a half!
JF: That makes sense, fantastic. So tell me how JDFITNESSUK came about? Why did you start it?
JD: Prior to qualifying as a personal trainer, I was actually an athlete. During an athletics competition, I pulled a hamstring and was unfortunately out of athletics for around seven months. I had to undergo intense physio and worked hard on getting my strength back in the gym. It was in the gym that I met a woman called Jackie (shout out to you, Jackie!) who was 18 stone. Upon building up rapport with her, we began training together and she lost 4 stone! It was from then that my interest in personal training grew and upon qualification, I launched my business. With regards to the name, JD, pretty self-explanatory, my initials; fitness, again, the industry I was venturing into and the UK part, (laughs) people around me had the crazy assumption that I knew "everyone" in the UK so I thought why not?
JF: I love that! You used what was seen as an unfortunate circumstance for your good! That actually brings me onto my next question. Since starting JDFITNESSUK, what has been your biggest challenge thus far and how did you overcome it?
JD: I can't lie, my biggest challenge has to be juggling my academics with working and building up JDFITNESSUK. Effective time management is essential. Know how and when to dedicate time to your different commitments and projects. It is really important to mentally prepare yourself. Personally, I am a man of faith so without God, belief in my graft, talent and ability, I definitely would have succumbed to the pressure.
JF: We thank God for that then! What can we expect from JDFITNESSUK?
JD: One word - INTERNATIONAL.
JD: Expect to see JDFITNESSUK in four other countries OTHER THAN the UK.
JF: I am eager to see what you are cooking up! Now, what advice would you give to others in the fitness industry?
JD: Understand that the industry is tough. With that being said, I would say three things - be patient, be consistent and be genuine. Be patient! You cannot rush success and it does take time to build up your name and reputation so dedicate time to doing exactly that. Be consistent! Stick with it and know that despite the obstacles that may come your way, you will be successful provided you remain consistent. Finally, be genuine about your passion. Authenticity shines through!
JF: Love that! Any final words?
JD: JDFITNESS will be going on tour again, so watch this space! Finally, word advice for everyone - do not get stuck. Whatever level of success you have obtained, congratulations, but do not get stuck where you are. There is always an opportunity for growth. Think about your next steps - what can you do to grow and continue succeeding in whatever it is that you are doing!
