As 2017 draws to a close, many of us are in a reflective space - thinking about how 2017 went and our goals and plans for 2018. In the run up to the New Year, I thought it would be great to have a short series of posts where I speak to a few more young entrepreneurs to hopefully provide some of you with the inspiration and encouragement you need to hit the ground running come January 1, 2018. I had the pleasure of interviewing Kaylar Will, owner of Kaylux Cosmetics and Kaylux Online, two businesses that have indeed taken off since inception. Two businesses and still looking this fire? Miss Will needs to teach us!
JF: For those who may not know who you are, who are you and what do you do?
K: My name is Kay, for short and I am an entrepreneur. I own Kaylux Cosmetics, a makeup line and Kaylux Online, a clothing line.
JF: I have followed you since you began Kaylux Cosmetics and it is great to see how you expanded your horizon and began your clothing line. Tell us a little bit more about Kaylux Online.
K: Kaylux Online started off as Kaylar Swim, a swimwear collection, which many people may have seen. I launched the site in March 2016. In April, I began to introduce clothing. This Fall, I introduced lingerie and early 2018 I plan to carry shoes as well - which I am very excited about. Kaylux Online as a brand, aims to build women's confidence, one outfit at a time.
JF: That's amazing! I remember seeing your cosmetic line and your swimwear line across all social media platforms and it is great to see the brand's development and subsequent expansion. The ethos of your brand is pretty special too because confidence can be encouraged in many forms and fashion is a big one! So, The 007 L Collection is absolutely stunning and I love it. I feel as though there is a look for pretty much every type of woman. Where do you get inspiration for your pieces and collections?
K: Interestingly, I did not design the pieces - I just worked as a buyer in securing them for the website. I am happy to know that you feel that there were pieces for every woman as I created the collection with every woman in mind. That's why most of the pieces are body-stocking style, fitting from 90lbs to 250lbs. I just wanted it to be as inclusive as possible. For the 007 James Bond theme, I love the movie series and I have always thought that the Bond girl names were so cool and fun. I have been dying to use those names and that theme. I thought that the lingerie collection was a perfect theme as the Bond girls are mysterious, sexy and dark - everything that my lingerie line is.
JF: I think that is definitely reflected in this collection. It is definitely important to keep the customer in mind when creating any sort of product and you seem to have executed that pretty well! Since starting your businesses, what has been your hardest lesson in your business journey thus far?
K: The hardest lesson thus far has to be that marketing never stops! A business is like a spinning wheel that you have to keep running. At one point, my products seemed to be selling themselves and my marketing began to slow down. It was at that time that my sales were declining and I realised that it was my own fault. I got a little too comfortable with not really working my brand and pushing my products. It is an every day thing and everyday, I wake up and feel like I am back at the starting line.
JF: Marketing is essential and you definitely utilise your social media platforms to your advantage and allow your personal brand to reflect through into your businesses. Who would you say is your biggest business inspiration and what principles have you learnt from them?
K: Conna Walker, the owner of House of CB is probably my only real business inspiration because we started our businesses similarly - selling wholesale, slowly introducing custom products, and then eventually going totally custom. I watched the entire growth of her business and witnessed House of CB literally becoming a dominating monster in the fashion industry! I do not feel at all ashamed or unaccomplished because of my progress or not being where I necessarily want to be. Right now, I am enjoying the journey and the lessons it has to offer.
JF: Having seen House of CB transition so smoothly from Celeb Boutique into what it is today is very inspiring! What advice would you give to young, like-minded entrepreneurs?
K: Start a business for no other reason than because you’re passionate about the service you are offering or product/item you are selling. A lot of business, I feel like they’re trendy. People see it is relatively easy to start, but they have no idea of the challenges it takes to keep it going. There are going to be times when nothing is going right, sales may be low, production may be behind, etc. but in those moments, the only thing that will keep you going is the love for what you do.
JF: 100%. Passion and a genuine love for what you do is essential and that definitely shines through in the product or service you provide. So, what does the future hold for Kaylux Online?
K: Oh my, so many things! Shoes in early 2018 as I mentioned earlier, SS18 swimwear - completely custom! - pop-up shops, and just further expansion. Look out for more items available, growing the Kaylux Online team and a commitment to continuously improving customer service.
